COD vs prepaid orders: costs, risks and how to move customers to prepaid

Many customers like COD because it feels safe. You carry the risk. The aim is not to remove COD but to make paying first the easy choice.

Side by side

  • Prepaid: money is yours before shipping, refusals are rare, refunds are explicit.
  • COD: some customers only buy this way, but refusals and cash handling cost you.

Ways to nudge, without forcing

  • Show a small prepaid benefit near the payment choice.
  • Add a COD fee that is clear and fair.
  • Offer COD with a small advance, which is half prepaid.
  • Hide COD on large orders and offer prepaid or an advance instead.

Do not remove COD blindly

If many of your customers can only or will only pay on delivery, removing it loses those sales. Test changes on parts of the store, and compare refusal rate and conversion.

How Threshold does it. A partial advance is the middle road: the customer prepays a small part online and pays the rest on delivery. See partial COD.

Questions

Should I stop offering COD?

Not automatically. Compare what COD earns with what its refusals cost, order by order, before deciding.

What is the safest compromise?

COD with a small advance.
