COD order statuses in WooCommerce: advance due and balance due

A partial COD order lives in two states before it is finished. Clear names make the orders list readable at a glance.

Threshold · 2 min read · Updated 28 Oct 2026

The two statuses

  • COD: advance due. The order is waiting for the advance to be paid.
  • COD: balance due. The advance is paid and the rest is collected on delivery.

Order actions

  • Balance collected: the cash has been received and the order is finished.
  • Customer refused delivery: record the refusal so the dashboard counts it.

Cancel stale orders

If the advance is never paid, cancel the order after a set number of hours and release the stock, so unpaid orders do not hold inventory.

Emails

Send the customer an email asking for the advance and another when it is received. Send yourself the normal new order email once the advance is paid.

How Threshold does it. Threshold registers both statuses, adds both order actions, cancels unpaid advances after the hours you set and uses editable WooCommerce emails. See statuses and actions.

Questions

Where do I see which orders have a balance to collect?

In the orders list, and in the dashboard's balance to collect panel.

Are advance orders counted as sales?

No. They are hidden from the orders list and not counted as revenue in WooCommerce Analytics.
